The English “boomerang” is taken from the Darug – Sydney region – word for this ancient and sophisticated weapon. Other language groups know it by as many names as there are versions of the versatile tool. WA’s Nyungar people called one type kylie, and it formed part of the original name for Esperance – Gabbykylie, the boomerang-shaped bay.
