| Gilbert’s potoroo |
|
The Gilbert’s potoroo was believed extinct until its rediscovery in 1994 on WA’s south coast, and the Department of Environment and Conservation is determined not to lose it again. Money raised will assist the recovery program, which includes protecting the current population and establishing a second population on Bald Island, east of Albany. |

| Tasmanian Masked Owl |
| The Tasmanian masked owl is the world's largest barn owl and one of Australia's rarest birds. It's thought that only 1100 breeding pairs remain in the wild, where they nest in the hollows of mature eucalypts. The Australian Geographic Society is raising funds for a detailed study into the owl's behaviour, which aims to widen understanding of how forestry practices affect the owl's habitat, and ultimately its survival.
The Tasmanian masked owl fundraiser is continuing and $3527 was raised for the April period. It is one of the world's largest barn owls and one of Australia's rarest birds. | Saving the Bennett’s tree kangaroo |
In order to discover more about and protect the lesser known Bennett's tree kangaroo, the Australian Geographic Society has provided over $14,000 from donations and funds raised with the help of the 50+ Australian Geographic retail stores across Australia. The funds raised will support a two-pronged effort by Rainforest Rescue and the Tree Kangaroo and Mammal Group (TKMG). Half of the funds are going to Rainforest Rescue in the purchase and protection of important habitat through its Daintree Buy Back and Protect Forever Project and the other half will assist TKMG in its study of the population and distribution of the species. |
